Römerquelle – Edeltal’s healing springs

Many know the Römerquelle brand of mineral water, but perhaps not the exciting history behind it, which indeed goes back to Roman times. Finds prove that there was much bathing activity in the spring near Carnuntum’s military camp. Even a wounded Marcus Aurelius is supposed to have been healed here.

At the end of the 19th century the healing waters are rediscovered by a herdsman. The spring is always overflowing, soaking the ground, and the herdsman notices that cattle and horses with bad legs recover well here. People also find relief from skin diseases and eye infections and the word soon spreads. Even the Neue Eisenstadter newspaper reports on it in 1931: a woman whose leg is scheduled for amputation is healed at the last minute and a boy with a bad rash recovers after several baths. Eventually the healing power of the spring, which contains radium, is proven by a survey and the water is bottled from 1948 on.

After the spring is recognised as having healing properties, the Römerquelle GmbH takes over the small company in 1965, modernising it and building a new bottling facility. And so it advances to one of the most well-known brands in Austria. Its final breakthrough in the 1970s is aided by the slogan “Römerquelle refreshes the senses”.

Since 2003 Römerquelle has belonged to Coca-Cola Austria. The modern production centre fills 45,000 bottles an hour. But not just with Römerquelle! Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Nestea, Cappy and energy drinks are produced here in Edelstal as well.
