Prellenkirchen wine cellars

The picturesque collection of wine cellars from the 18th century with their stone arches can be found in the Spitzerberg nature reserve and belongs to the wine region of Carnuntum. Vast rock steppes, dry grasslands and the Pannonian climate characterise this area and offer the ideal conditions for viticulture.

Marvellous red wines thrive here, above all the typical Blaufränkisch and full-bodied Zweigelt. Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay dominate the white wine varieties.

Originally built for wine pressing, the wine cellars are now a place to socialise and recuperate. There is always a tavern open, selling local wine, and there are often 2 with a bush hanging up outside (meaning they are serving). Here simple, cold dishes such as homemade spreads, brawn and smoked meats are still served in the traditional manner. While relaxing on a rustic tavern bench you can take in views of vast rapeseed fields and vineyards. You can often see gophers and lizards among the cellars and deer and rabbits in the fields.

There is also small museum, vividly documenting the history of winemaking from olden times, when it was still a manual process. To visit, make an appointment by telephone with the local authority. They also offer walks with trained tour guides.

Every August, the 2-day Prellenkirchen wine cellars’ festival attracts thousands of guests from near and far. The taverns and many private wine cellars are open on these days with crafts and jewellery on display, alongside excellent wines and culinary delights.
