The King’s Look-out in Berg

The 22.7-m-high observation tower was opened on the Königswarte, Austria’s most easterly mountain, in 2001.

Those who conquer its 120 steps will, in good weather, be rewarded with an impressive panorama. From the Vienna Woods to the Schneeberg and Rax mountains, from the Hungarian lowlands to the Carpathians, Neusiedl Lake, Danube and Morava plains all the way to the Marchfeld.

Emperors Frederick Barbarossa, Leopold I, Napoleon, Francis I and Franz Joseph I - all of them used the Königswarte for an unencumbered overview of their troops. The 344-m-high mountain already served as an important observation point in the time of the monarchy.

Observations are still made today. Since 1958 the Armed Forces have had a facility here, known commonly as the weather station. Its officially purpose is radio reconnaissance but don’t worry, this does not apply to peaceful hikers!

So relax and take in the beautiful pastures of the Königswarte. Animals from the farms in Berg grazed here until into the 1960s. After this time the unique dry grasslands turned increasingly to bushland. A pasturage project with a 10-strong Galloway herd was started in the year 2000 – today donkeys, horses and goats graze here. In this way the prized meadows were restored and maintained. The project is still running successfully today.

And so the exciting story of the Königswarte in Berg continues.

Have fun climbing the observation tower!
