Berg folk costume

Folk dress and customs have strong roots in Berg. The place even created its own folk costume. The pretty blue dress with a checked apron for ladies and grey-blue jacket with matching checked tie for gentleman are worn at traditional village festivals – and there are a lot of these in Berg.

The “putting-up-the-maypole” celebration, organised by the young people of Berg in the town centre, is quite a spectacle. The finest tree is carefully selected weeks before, elaborately decorated and put up next to the fire station on April 30th. This feat of strength just has to be celebrated and hearty music, food and drink are an indispensable part of the “Festl” that follows.

In Berg, clubs, organisations and the municipality pull together. This is particularly clear at the village gathering at the Dreiländerbrunnen, held every 3 years in June, where the focus is on being together, communicating and exchanging ideas. The aim of the festival is also to cross-examine those new to Berg and to integrate them into village life.

Harvest festival is a must. The harvest crown, which takes hours to construct from the harvest crops, is brought to the square in front of the fire station and blessed in festive fashion. Afterwards the procession heads into church for mass. This typical Berg festival culminates in an agape with regional delicacies and the chance to chat.

Dirndlgwand Sunday is probably the best event to show off your Berg folk costume. On this Lower Austrian “folk costume day” the men and women of Berg don the typical regional dress and celebrate mass together. The picture is a beautiful one but it also strengthens the feeling of belonging, for which the municipality of Berg is known throughout the region.
