The 3 wine slopes

From this observation point there is a wonderful view of 3 peaks in the Arbesthal hillsides. They offer the ideal conditions for grape growing and are among the most important wine slopes in the Carnuntum region: Schüttenberg, Rosenberg and Altenberg.

The south-facing Schüttenberg mountain is the highest at 384m. Its steep slopes heat up immensely in the sun and rain trickles through the gravel easily. Its name has to do with the German word for gravel - “Schotter” – deposited by the Danube. The late-ripening Merlot grapes are favoured for planting here.

Rosenberg mountain consists nearly entirely of gravel with a high lime content and produces velvety reds that age well. The fertile layer of loess is ideal for fruity and strong wines like Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Altenberg mountain is characterised by dry and gravelly ground and the forests on the plateau ensure it cools down quickly at night. The dramatic fluctuations in temperature give the grapes a special aroma.

The rambling Leitha mountains extend to the south-west and in clear weather you can even make out Schneeberg mountain. You can also see beautiful Arbesthal with its numerous taverns and pretty lane of wine cellars. It is worth a visit!
