The Arbesthal hillsides and wine cellars

The Arbesthal hillsides are an undulating landscape and grapes have been grown on the southern slopes for centuries. The sun shines here for more than 2,000 hours each year. The rays start penetrating early in the morning and continue until late in the evening. The warm, dry, southeast wind also warms the region, which is protected from the cold northeast wind. Extreme differences in temperature from day to night greatly affect the aroma of the wine. The loess and lime in the ground are good for retaining water and produce fruity wines. The more austere, gravelly elevations result in warm, velvety reds with great aging potential; these form approximately two thirds, and so the bulk, of wine produced.

Like many of Carnuntum’s wine-growing areas, Arbesthal also has an idyllic lane of wine cellars, inviting you to spend time in one of the numerous Heurigen taverns and to go on a relaxing walk. The lane consists of a long row of single cellars on the northwest edge of Arbesthal and several double-sided cellars, the oldest dating back to 1677. It is nearly a kilometre in length and boasts 76 buildings, several of which are open regularly for guests. The methods of construction differ, but most have gables running parallel to the lane.

With 1,000 hectares of vineyard, the Arbesthal hillsides form the centre of the Carnuntum wine region. Try the excellent quality of the wine for yourself – at a tavern, village inn or gourmet restaurant or at a rustic wine tasting directly at the winemaker’s.
