Succulent house

Succulent house

The Botanical Garden's collection of water-storing plants (succulents) comprises around 800 species and 3,700 plants. Many of these plants spend the summer outdoors. In winter, they are housed in the two greenhouses opposite the succulent group. A collection of special species from southern Africa is housed in the Cape House behind it. The plants are kept very close together here and are not accessible to visitors.

Many of these plants are not watered during the winter in the greenhouse so that they are not too heavy when they are carried out in the spring. It is more difficult to carry them into the greenhouse in autumn, when the large cacti in particular have absorbed a lot of rainwater and often weigh dozens of kilos more than in spring.

To carry the plants, the gardeners must wear protective clothing and gloves to avoid injury from the thorns of the succulent plants. In addition, they also need to wear goggles to protect their eyes.
