Blooming fallow field

Blooming fallow field

A blooming fallow field has developed around the Botanicum in recent years. When developing the grounds, our gardeners try to make sure that plants can grow wild here and elsewhere in the Garden. Our gardeners only intervene very sparingly in the fallow fields and weed corners.

The pioneer plants on the fallow field tap into nutrients and water with their roots and provide shade with their leaves. They thus prepare the soil for trees and shrubs and ensure that the fallow field remains a living, constantly changing area.

The plants also attract numerous animals. The fallow field is home to insects, spiders, birds and even the nonvenomous Aesculapian snake. These animals feed on leaves and seeds, suck nectar from the flowers or hunt for prey in the thicket.
