Restoring the transom windows
Back to their original state
The Baroque windows of the Hofburg overlooking Josefsplatz are transom windows typical of the mid-18th century when glass was only available or affordable in small format.
To provide the high interior spaces with enough daylight, two six-plated transom lights were placed above the eight-plated windows. As part of refurbishments all wooden surfaces, frames and bars were stripped of their old paint and primed with hot, boiled linseed oil. Afterwards the fittings – treated with anti-rust paint - were mounted and the entire window repainted with white oil paint as it was originally.
